Choosing the right photographer - things to consider
A quick Google search will show you that professional photography in Adelaide is easily a saturated market which can make it quite difficult to narrow down who is the best photographer for you.
I’ve put together a little list of some of the key factors that I would personally take into consideration before making a commitment…..
1. Safety & Ethics:
Newborn safety: Always my number one concern. Are they trained in newborn safety and know how to safely handle and pose your precious baby? Do they do follow safety procedures such as shooting the “froggy’ pose as a composite?
Are they advertising with their own images: Some photographers (often newer to the industry) will advertise sessions using ‘stock’ or Pinterest images that they have not created themselves. Not only is it unfair for them to potentially profit off of someone else’s hard work, it can lead to disappointed clients as while the images they have used may be stunning, they may not have the skills, knowledge or equipment/props to pull it off themselves.
2. Style:
Review portfolios: Look at the photographer's previous work to see if their style aligns with your vision. Do you prefer candid, natural shots or more posed, traditional portraits?
Consider the setting: Think about where you want your photos taken and whether the photographer's style complements the location.
Is their style consistent: It can be a great idea to look through their website and social media pages to check if the photos are shot and edited in a consistent manner so that you can know what to expect from how they capture your photos.
3. Experience:
Years in business: A photographer with experience is more likely to have developed the skills and techniques needed to capture beautiful images.
Specialisations: If you're looking for a specific type of session, such as birth photography, newborn photography or maternity photography, ensure that the photographer has experience in that area. Not all photography is the same and some events just can’t be recreated.
Locations: Are you able to choose the location for the photography session or do they have a set place that they will only use. Can they offer you recommendations for locations that they have found work best for the type of session you want.
Inclusions: Do they offer a session/package that will include everything you’d like? eg Cake Smash Photography Sessions - do they include a clean up bath or it that extra? Do you need to bring your own cake? If supplied, can they guarantee an allergy free cake if needed? Can you choose any theme you’d like or are there only set themes to choose from.
Support: Do they offer advice for what to wear, how to prepare and what to expect during and after your photography session?
Kids: Are they good at keeping kids engaged and capturing natural smiles?
4. Personality:
Compatibility: It's important to feel comfortable with the photographer, as they will be spending time with your family. Look for someone who makes you feel at ease and who has a positive and friendly demeanor.
Communication: A good photographer should be able to communicate effectively and seek to understand your needs and expectations.
5. Pricing:
Packages: Compare pricing packages offered by different photographers to find one that fits your budget.
Products: Do they offer quality products that you would love to display in my home? Do they have samples for you to view before ordering?
Additional costs: Check for any additional fees, such as travel expenses or print costs.
Purchasing: What happens to your images if you don’t purchase them right way? Are they kept on file or deleted? Is there a minimum spend or obligation to purchase?
Your deposit: What happens if you need to reschedule or cancel for any reason?
6. Reviews:
Testimonials: Read reviews from previous clients to get a sense of the photographer's professionalism and quality of work.
Remember, choosing the right photographer is a personal decision.
Take your time to research and find someone who you feel will capture your family's unique story in a beautiful and meaningful way.
